Kwibuka31 commemoration in the Netherlands

On 7th of April 2025, the Rwandan community in the Netherlands, friends of Rwanda and the diplomatic community together with officials from the Dutch government came together to commemorate the 31st Anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. This annual event is an opportunity to honour and remember the victims, offer support to the survivors and re-affirm the commitment to fighting genocide ideology and genocide denial while striving to build a better future for all Rwandans.

The ceremony began with a wreath laying ceremony at the memorial site, located in the Beatrix park in the city of Amsterdam. This ceremony was followed by a commemorative ceremony in which the representative of IBUKA-NL, Mr. Joseph Rutazihana, the Deputy Mayor of Amsterdam, Madam Touria Meliani, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Justice and Security, Madam Anneke Van Dijk delivered messages of solidarity with the victims and hope for the survivors.

In his remarks, the Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of Rwanda, highlighted the importance of remembrance of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. He highlighted Rwanda’s commitment to unity, renewal and raise attention on the dangers of denial in Europe and elsewhere in the world which continues to feed the genocide ideology that continues to spread. He concluded by call for action to ensure that “Never again” does not become just another slogan but rather a commitment to action.
