Arensman Leads Dutch Team at 2025 UCI Road World Championships in Kigali
The Netherlands arrives in Kigali, Rwanda, ready to chase rainbow glory at the 2025 UCI Road World Championships, with Thymen Arensman emerging as the team’s leader in the absence of defending champion Mathieu van der Poel. As one of the most promising young talents in Dutch cycling, Arensman carries the hopes of a nation on a challenging and hilly African course.
Arensman comes off a strong season, including two stage victories at the Tour de France, demonstrating his climbing ability, tactical intelligence, and resilience. National coach Koos Moerenhout highlighted the team’s approach: “Without Mathieu, we have more flexibility in how we tackle the race. Thymen has shown remarkable form and will be central to our strategy.”
Backing him is a well-rounded squad combining experience and youth: Bauke Mollema, Wout Poels, Koen Bouwman, Sam Oomen, and rising star Frank van den Broek. Their mix of climbing prowess and breakaway skills gives the Netherlands multiple tactical options on Kigali’s demanding circuit.
The Rwandan course, with its technical climbs and high-altitude conditions, favors riders capable of sustaining high tempo over hilly terrain — traits that suit Arensman’s style perfectly. He will also contest the individual time trial, offering another opportunity to showcase his versatility and strength.
Moerenhout is optimistic about the squad’s prospects: “It will be a tough race, but our riders have prepared meticulously. They have the qualities to compete at the highest level, and we aim to see them feature prominently in the decisive moments.”
With a talented leader, a versatile supporting team, and a clear strategy, the Netherlands is poised to make a strong impression at the first-ever UCI Road World Championships held in Africa.
